Monero (formerly BitMonero) is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency and blockchain whose primary focus is on privacy, security and decentralization. Transactions are nearly completely untraceable through the use of blockchain obfuscation technologies based on the CryptoNote protocol. It is also truly decentralized due to its smart mining feature, which allows for transparent CPU mining and limits the effectiveness of big mining rigs and mining pools. Scalability also a priority, with block sizes not being limited to a certain size, although if a block’s size is larger than the median size of the previous 100 blocks it will incur some block reward penalties. XMR is the token of value that can be sent over the Monero blockchain and used as block mining rewards.
With Monero's sophisticated privacy-centric technology, you get all of the security benefits of the blockchain without any of the privacy trade-offs. By taking advantage of ring signatures, Monero makes it ambiguous which funds have been spent, and thus extremely unlikely that a transaction could be linked to particular user.
